Ever feel like you’re just standing around waiting for a convection oven to finally hit temperature? It’s a drag. When you’re trying to push more through your line, relying on air circulation alone is like trying to heat a swimming pool with a hair dryer. It’s slow, and it creates a massive bottleneck in your day. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (IR) bulbs. Instead of heating up all the air in the oven first, these bulbs shoot energy straight into the part. It’s a shortcut.
How it actually works
Think of it like stepping out into the sun on a cold day. You don’t wait for the air around you to get warm; you feel the heat on your skin instantly. These IR lamps do the same thing. They send out electromagnetic radiation that the material absorbs immediately. When you add these to your setup, you get heat almost the second you flip the switch. It acts as a booster, getting your parts up to temp fast and shaving precious minutes off your cycle time.
The nitty-gritty on the gear
We usually pick the lamps based on how much heat you actually need in a specific spot. Higher wattage means more punch, but you’ve got to make sure your power supply can actually handle it. To keep things simple, we use standard connectors like R7s or SK15. That way, if a tube burns out, you can just pop a new one in and get back to work without a headache. Most of these have a halogen-filled quartz envelope to help them last longer. We also tend to use coated versions. This helps the heat soak into the material rather than just scorching the surface.
A few things to watch out for
Now, this isn’t some magic wand. IR heating is intense. Because it’s so focused, you can end up with “hot spots” if your parts are just sitting still. You’ll want to keep things moving or rotating. You also need a decent PID controller to throttle the power as you hit your target temperature. Otherwise, you’re just wasting energy. And one last tip: if you’re cramming a 2000W tube into a small space, double-check your wiring. You don’t want to find out the hard way that your sockets can’t handle the current.
