What it’s really doing under the hood
The SK15 is a short-wave infrared lamp, built around a high-purity quartz envelope and reflector geometry that’s tuned for the job. It throws direct radiant heat with a fast thermal response, so you’re not waiting on the thermal mass of a furnace to settle. The output sits in the near-infrared band, which glass and many coatings absorb well, so you rely less on convection heating. In the high-power zones, that translates to quicker ramp-up and shorter soak windows. The lamp is engineered for long duty cycles, with output stability over thousands of hours. We’ve got units running 5,000+ hours with less than 5% output drop.
Why this matters on the floor
In tempering, bending, lamination, and coating drying, you need uniform heating without cooking thermal stress into the glass. The SK15’s focused beam helps even out the thermal profile across the surface, which supports consistent curvature, tighter optical quality, and fewer rejects from stress fractures. Faster heating shortens the cycle, so you move more glass without adding ovens or extra press capacity. And because the energy goes straight into the glass, less wasted heat bleeds into the plant and the machine frame. Over a year, that trim in energy draw shows up as real savings on the operating cost.
The practical stuff you can’t skip
The SK15 is designed to retrofit cleanly into existing heating modules, but alignment is not optional. Reflector positioning has to be checked so uniformity holds across the full glass width—otherwise you’re chasing hot spots, uneven temper, or uneven lamination. You’ll want a short commissioning window to dial in power settings and dwell time for your specific thickness and emissivity. The environment matters too: ambient dust and oil mist will shorten lamp life, so confirm your enclosure sealing and cooling air filtration are up to it. Plan replacements around your peak production windows. The lamp is tough, but like any high-temperature component, it still wears.
