
Why we put our bathroom heaters through the “damp-heat” ringer
Bathrooms are basically a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, constant humidity, and temperatures that swing from freezing to sweltering in minutes. It’s the perfect recipe for a short circuit. Now, you’ll see “IP65” on the spec sheet. That’s great, but a rating on a piece of paper doesn’t mean much in the real world. That’s why we don’t just trust the rating—we actually try to break the heaters in our lab using damp-heat aging tests.
The problem with steam
Here is the thing: IP65 means the unit can handle dust and water jets. But in a bathroom, the real villain isn’t a splash of water—it’s water vapor. Steam is sneaky. It finds microscopic gaps that liquid water just can’t get through. Once it slips inside, it turns back into droplets on the electrical terminals and the lamp contacts. That leads to rust, corrosion, or a total electrical failure. To stop that, we throw our heaters into high-humidity chambers. We crank up the heat and soak them in moisture for hours and days, simulating years of actual use. If a gasket is slightly off or a seal is weak, the unit fails right there. We’d much rather a lamp burn out in our lab than in your customer’s ceiling.
The balancing act
Getting this right is a bit of a tug-of-war. We use high-temp silicone gaskets and alloys that won’t rust, but there’s a catch. If you seal a heater too tightly, the internal heat can’t escape. If that heat stays trapped, it fries the wiring. So, we spend a lot of time tweaking the airflow. We want it sealed tight enough to keep the steam out, but open enough so the internals can breathe. It’s a delicate balance.
Making sure it actually works
Once the aging cycle is done, we check the insulation resistance. Simple as that. If the numbers drop even a little bit, the design goes straight back to the drawing board. We do this so you can install these heaters and forget about them. No flickering, no popping, and definitely no tripping the breaker the second someone takes a hot shower.
