
On a tempering or bending line, the oven is where you make or lose yield. If the temperature sensor lags, drifts, or reads a degree or two off, heating goes uneven. You’ll see roller wave, edge bow, or the worst—thermal stress fractures that only show up after cutting. The control system can only manage what it can measure, and measure it consistently.
What matters, technically
We build our glass oven temperature sensors with a quartz sheath, because it handles thermal shock and keeps emissivity stable through rapid heat-up and cool-down. The sensing element sits close to the glass plane, so the controller sees process temperature, not just heater temperature. Operating range is 300–750°C. Response is under 1.5 seconds in still air, faster in forced convection. Calibration is traceable, and the output is linearized to keep PLC scaling honest. For retrofits, the mounting dimensions and terminal block match common oven ports, and the lead is rated for the high-temp zone.
Why this matters on the line
In tempering, a uniform thermal field is the difference between consistent bow and optical distortion—and scrap you have to rework. A stable, fast-response sensor keeps the oven on the heating curve, so the glass hits target without hot spots. In bending, cycle variability drops. Molds repeat better when oven temperature doesn’t swing. For lamination preheat and IG secondary seal lines, the same discipline shortens heat-up time and cuts energy draw, while keeping polymer coatings from overheating.
The practical details
These sensors are tough, but they’re not immune to plant life. Mounting orientation matters. Point the sensing tip away from radiant heaters, and avoid direct air nozzle impingement—otherwise you’ll chase false readings. Keep the tip clean. Dust and coating residues shift emissivity. Calibration drift happens; expect about 1–2°C after 6,000–8,000 hours, depending on oven atmosphere. Plan periodic checks against a known standard. If your oven cycles hard and fast, make sure the sheath material and lead rating match the profile.
