
Dealing with Cold Spots in Your Glassware Kilns
Ever notice how some parts of your glass just won’t heat up? If you’re working with tricky shapes—think narrow necks, sharp shoulders, or deep bases—standard convection heating usually lets you down. The hot air just doesn’t make it into those tight corners. You end up with “dead zones,” and that’s where the trouble starts. That’s why we lean on short-wave infrared (IR) lamps.
Getting the Heat Where it Actually Needs to Go
The beauty of IR is that it doesn’t care about air currents. It just shoots energy straight into the glass. To make this work for weird shapes, we don’t just throw one lamp in there. We set them up in staggered or concentric arrays. Basically, we hit the piece from every possible angle. When you attack the glass from multiple directions, those cold spots vanish. No more internal stress, and way fewer pieces cracking during the cooling phase.
The Gear That Actually Works
For the big industrial lines, we usually go with high-wattage quartz halogen tubes. They’ve got the punch needed to get thick-walled glass up to temp without wasting half the day. One pro tip: make sure your lamp length actually fits your kiln’s footprint. There’s no point in paying for energy that’s just heating up the walls of your machine. We also stick to R7s or SK15 connectors. Why? Because lamps burn out. It happens. When one goes mid-shift, your team can just pop a new one in and keep moving. No one wants to spend an hour rewiring a whole rack just to get back online.
The Reality Check
Now, here’s the catch. High-density IR arrays pull a lot of power. If you’re running a bank of 2000W lamps, your electrical panel is going to feel it. Double-check your wiring and breakers to make sure they can handle the peak current, or you’ll be tripping breakers all day. And watch out for the heat. I mean really watch out. That radiant heat is intense. It’ll bake your housing if you aren’t careful. You’ll want high-temp insulation or some forced-air cooling on those sockets. Otherwise, you’re looking at melted connectors and a lot of swearing. But once you have it dialed in? Your preheating time plummets. Everything hits the annealing point at the same time, and you stop throwing so much scrap in the bin.
